Biotex Clothing to Measure Wearer's Health

BiotexA Swiss consortium is working on intelligent clothing materials that will analyse the wearer's sweat in order to provide information on the wearer's health. The material incorporates miniature sensors that can detect oxygen and ion levels. It's claimed these could be used to check on recovering hospital patients, people with chronic illnesses or injured athletes.

So far, the consortium - working with EU funding - has developed a multi-sensor test patch whcih will be able to detect several elements in parallel. The first version will measure acidity, salinity and the rate of perspiration. It is not the intention to replace normal diagnostic methods but to provide additional information to doctors that would otherwise have required the patient going to hospital.
